What is Mammography
A Mammogram is a type of procedure that uses a low-dose radiation system to examine the tissue of the breasts. Mammography is used as a screening tool to detect early breast cancer in women experiencing no symptoms and to detect and diagnose breast disease in women experiencing symptoms such as a lump, pain or nipple discharge.
True Imaging performs screening mammogram's for women with no symptoms. Diagnostic mammogram's are performed on patients that are experiencing pain, discomfort, lumps or nipple discharge. True Imaging also does breast ultrasound and breast MRI if such exams are needed.
Mammography plays a vital role in the early detection of breast cancer, and can often detect a lump in the breast before it can be felt. Annual mammogram's are recommended by the American Cancer Society for women who are 40 or more years of age, or women at high-risk for breast cancer, including those with a family history.
Preparing for a Mammogram
Patients scheduled for a mammogram at True Imaging should not wear any powders,
perfumes or deodorants on the day of the exam to avoid artifacts that mimic breast disease. Patients may wear facial makeup or perfume only behind the ears. Wear a two-piece outfit. Patients who may be pregnant should inform the Technologist prior to the exam.
During a Mammogram
Multiple views of both breasts will be taken. The Technologist will explain prior to the exam what will happen, and will talk you through the exam.
After a Mammogram
Once an exam is completed, images of the breast will be reviewed by a True Imaging Radiologist. The patient will receive a letter from True Imaging in seven to ten days stating whether everything is all right or if you will need further follow up. Your doctor will receive the official mammogram report by the time you receive your letter, if you have any questions you can contact your doctor. |
